3rd Annual Old Construction & Surface Mining Equipment Show
The show held this past September (September 9-10), in conjunction with the nearby 44 th annual Stumptown Steam Threshers Reunion & Show was well attended. The show had the most visitors since being started in 2004, by members of the HCRHP, Ohio Valley Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association, and the Buckeye Vintage Diggers as a work party for the Marion 7200 relocation project.
The HCRHP’s Marion 111-M dragline was in operation Saturday digging for the first time since being acquired, until a mechanical failure. The HCRHP’s Insley L dragline was in operation both days. Dal Waterson’s Lorain 80 Shovel was in operation Sunday. The Shovel’s owner is from Darlington, Pennsylvania and was transported to the show grounds eight days before the show from the Darlington area. Howard Bowers displayed his 1941 chain drive Sterling Truck with an attached trailer. Bowers included a display of photographs from a number of large transports the truck did over the years, including large shovel parts.
Thanks to Martin McKim, Steve Netta, Dale Cairns, Ray Miller, Casey Miller, Mike Collette, Cody Collette, Bill Pugh, Bryan Coulson, Howard Bowers, Dal Waterson, Ed Waterson, Bill Waterson, Mike Woloszyn, Dale Davis, Cravat Coal Company, Jean Barylak, and anyone we may have missed, that helped in anyway. Thanks to Saturday’s shuttle van drivers Fred Phillipi, Don Richards, and Carl Streley.

4th Annual Old Construction & Surface Mining Equipment Show
Wow, the rain and the people
There was a lot of rain and people at the 4 th annual show. The show started with morning rain Saturday, around 10:30am the sun came out until the 4pm, when the rain returned. We had rain all day Sunday. Despite the rain we had great attendance. Based on the large amounts of people on the grounds, better than last year’s best ever attendance. The show was held in conjunction with the 45 th Annual Stumptown Steam Threshers Reunion & Show September 8 & 9, 2007.
The Marion 111-M dragline was in operation during the show. During last year’s show the exciter shorted out late Saturday. The exciter was tested by Fenton Electric this past spring and they determined there was a short in the armature. Price quotes, was received from three companies that rewind armatures and repair exciters. Two quotes averaged $9,000-$10,000 plus to do the repair work. Tri-State Electric & Machine of Glen Dale, WV did the needed repair work for around $5, 495.00. A donor donated $1,000 towards the repair work “Thanks Donor”. Thanks to Ray Miller’s Excavating for transporting the exciter to and from Tri-State Electric.
The Insley L Dragline was in operation during the show. Since last year’s show, some mechanical work was done and clutches relined. Additional clutch relining, turbo, and engine work will be done throughout the winter. Plans are to move the dragline off sight to be able to do repair work indoors. Jim Carter is checking into finding a true Insley center boom section for the dragline. Boom support cable needs replace in the future.
Dal Waterson’s Lorain 80 shovel was in operation during the show. Since last year’s show volunteers did some mechanical work for Dal and made sure it was in working order for this year’s show.
Don Stewart’s Euclid dump truck was in operation during the show. The Lorain 80 operators had the honor of loading the Euclid throughout the weekend.
Howard Bower’s 1941 Sterling chain drive truck with trailer attached was on display.
Mike Collette’s Cat D2 dozer was in operation during the show. It did some reclamation work, throughout the weekend.
Dusty Welch displayed during the show Saturday his lego model of a walking dragline he built.
On Sunday, the HCRHP’s Cat 14E road grader donated by the Olen Corp. of Columbus, Ohio was delivered and in operation. Thanks to Don Stewart and Mike Foley for picking up the grader at Olen’s. Before being delivered, the ATHS Buckeye Vintage Haulers Chapter and the Buckeye Vintage Diggers now known as the HCEA Buckeye Power Chapter did maintenance and mechanical work to the grader. It was used and displayed at their past three shows. Thanks to Dan Van Ness and Dave Bigler for delivering it.
The HCRHP’s P& H Truck crane was ready to help out, if needed. Maintenance work was done to it over the summer. Thanks to Jim Mehlmen for providing transportation for the crane last year.
We hope to have more private owned and HCRHP owned machinery in operation next year. A 2004 exhibitor made the comment; I wish I brought one of my antiques and said he plans to bring one of his antiques next year. It was the first time he was at our show since 2004. A current exhibitor said he plans to bring at least one more antique next year. The Cat D7 dozer that was in operation at the 2004 show may be back next year to help with reclamation work.
Plans were to have the Cletrac BGS dozer in operation for this year’s show. Transmission clutches was replaced this past summer. The exhaust manifold had a leak that couldn’t be repaired and needs replaced. It could cost around $700.00 for another manifold and are in search for a replacement.
The Cat 977 is being worked on. Don Stewart loaned a operation & maintenance manual to help with restoration work. Additional restoration help was offered during the show.
The Dart bottom dump truck is on the list for restoration. It may need the Cummins Engine Replaced. There was a couple people at the show that operated or did mechanic work that era Darts.
We are currently in need of gravity feed fuel tanks in good condition. This will help with fuel storage for the show.
Thanks to the exhibitors and everyone that helped in anyway. Thanks to Ray Miller, Casey Miller, Bill Pugh, Bob Powley, Steve Netta, Martin McKim, Mike Collette, Cody Collette, Don Stewart, Mike Foley, Deno Colanni, Donnie Headley, Dusty Welch, Bryan Coulson, Howard Bowers, Dal Waterson, Bill Waterson and anyone we may of missed. Thanks to Fred Phillippi for providing the shuttle and to Jodi Netta for providing the tents.
The HCRHP and the Ohio Valley Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association would like to thank everyone who attended the show and anyone who offered to help in anyway with machinery restoration projects.

5th Annual Old Construction & Surface Mining Equipment Show
The 5th Annual event held September 6 & 7, 2008 was the best ever. The number of people attending the show broke last years record, the number of equipment in operation was a record breaker. The first show previously held the record of the most equipment in operation. The weather was perfect both days.
Visitors were from Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maine, West Virginia, and Montana.
HCRHP’s Marion 111-m dragline, HCRHP’s Cat 14E road grader, Howard Bower’s Insley K12 dragline, Dal Waterson’s Lorain 80 Shovel, Mike Collette’s Bay City 20 shovel, Donnie Cairns’s International crawler with front mounted boom, Mike Collette’s Cat D2 dozer, and Dan Van Ness’s Cat D6 dozer was in operation. Dan Van Ness had his 1940’s GMC truck on display.
A shuttle was operated from the Stumptown grounds Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Thanks to Donnie Richards and Dale Davis for operating the shuttle.
Joshua & John Kochy of Middlefield, Ohio flew in by helicopter Sunday. They landed at the Stumptown grounds. They was looking for information & parts for a BE 22-B. Probably the first time a helicopter landed at the Stumptown grounds.
Ron Tallmadge donated a fuel tank. This is a major help for the show. He brought a light plant along, in case it was needed. Thanks Ron.
A man from Columbus was at the show and may have a Cummins engine for the Dart bottom dump truck.
The HCRHP’s Insley L major maintenance project was not completed in time for the show. Some additional repairs were found to be done and the choice was to make the needed repairs when the machine was already apart. Jim Carter donated an Insley center boom section to replace the current one.
The Cat 997 loader was pulled to see, if the engine would turn. Members of the Buckeye Antique Power Chapter of the Historical Construction Equipment Association think there is still hope for it.
Plans were to have the Cletrac BGS dozer in operation for this year’s show. Transmission clutches was replaced in 2007. The exhaust manifold has a leak that couldn’t be repaired and needs replaced. It could cost around $700.00 for another manifold and are in search for a replacement.
Thanks to Steve Netta, Ray Miller, Casey Miller, Bryan Coulson, Mike Collette, Cody Collette, Martin McKim, Bob Powley, Gayle Jackowski, Howard Bowers, Lou McFarland, Dan Van Ness, Don Stewart, Mike Foley, Donnie Cairns, Dale Cairns, Andy Koile, Ron Tallmadge, Dusty Elch, Tony Kirchner, Chuck Shields, and anyone we missed that brought equipment, operated equipment, or helped out in anyway.
